Some songs remain in our memories, even if only like the debris washed up by the tide of time. Neel Sagore, one of the earliest creations of Gautam Chattopadhyay was never recorded by him, but has remained in our collective imaginations passed down through oral memory. On his birthday today, we return to this song as listeners first, and then as musicians. This home recording is our small tribute to the man whose work changed the grammar of Bengali music, and whose songs continue to travel through generations like unfinished letters. Sung by Nabamita and Rajarshi, with Dibyokamal on mandolin, this was our attempt to sit quietly beside a song we love deeply. Today is Rabindra Jayanti. In Bengal, this day is usually recognised before it is seen. Somewhere, from some distant lane or neighbourhood microphone, Rabindrasangeet travels through the wind. The songs become part of the air itself. Today, where we are, the wind feels strangely silent. This silence feels unfamiliar to us. Tagore is woven into the language with which we understand love, loneliness, nature, protest, tenderness and what it means to remain human. So today, we return this song to the wind.
